While undoubtedly offering its share of tawdry B-film flourishes, a light-hearted touch (despite the subject matter) and engaging cast really help sell this underrated Drive-In gem. Competing cheerleading squads travel together on a bus to their state championship. Along the way, they're pulled over by (what's believed to be) law enforcement. The bus driver is then replaced (said to be over an infraction) and police escort is offered.

I just finished watching my Code Red Blu-ray of Cheerleaders Wild Weekend. As I've posted before, I saw Cheerleaders Wild Weekend many years ago when I rented it from the mildewy back room of a local video rental store in rural Georgia back in 1990 or so. I liked it enough that I rented it twice, in fact. I never forgot about this film, and I always cracked up when recollecting it, but I did somehow forget the film's title, and never thought to look for it during my DVD collecting days. It goes without saying that my eyes lit up when I saw the announcement for this Code Red title, and read the brief summary of the film on the announcement page. Cheerleaders Wild Weekend (The Great American Girl Robbery) is a rather splendid film to own on Blu-ray. This 1979 film was released during that brief, but golden era when 1970s exploitation sensibilities combined with fun-spirited sex comedy sensibilities of the early 1980s to result in movies that showed plenty of glorious female nudity without crossing offensive taboo or violence levels.
A contest held to flash the rearward car, And send the driver spinning into tree. The will of girls must bend to villain's wish, When bus is stopped, and they are taken in. The man on air is quick to give the dish, Of girls and life, and what becomes of skin. A contest held, and winner gets the prize, So dance your lovely stuff, and prove the best. The winner's loss, and when it's done she cries, To live through this must be a girl's last test. You watch a girl become the villain's prey, A cheer with skin will see you through the day. The tightest thing about this movie was Leon Isaac Kennedy's afro. It was on point. And the doberman was the best actor in the movie. With a name like Cheerleader's Wild Weekend (at least that is what is on my Code Red blu-ray) I was hoping for a bit more fun. It wasn't as fun as I hoped but it had some good moments. The pacing was a bit slow and I caught myself skimming through the latest issue of Fangoria but I eventually put it down and powered through.
Kristine DeBell, who is unbelievably gorgeous, is a main draw of the film, but I'll add that there are no unattractive cheerleaders in this bunch. They're all quite healthy ladies. This Code Red Blu-ray looks fantastic to me, especially considering that my own previous exposure to the film was by way of VHS rental tapes. I have no complaints about the sound quality either. The Katarina Bucket List Mode feature is wonderful, as usual, and quite informative. I had no idea that so many people from this film had subsequently thrived in the business. The actor interviews are quite in-depth and interesting. Right now, I'm enjoying the audio commentary, and it's cool to see how fondly the filmmakers and cast look back on this drive-in "classic. "
It's surprisingly a fine example of talented filmmaking for what's usually thought of as the b-movie basement genre. After an hour of lame comedy and melodrama made tolerable by frequent and highly-appreciable nudity, the film takes a turn into heist territory that is actually legitimately entertaining and very well executed. You've suffered through worse to enjoy less. aka CHEERLEADERS WILD WEEKEND. Jason Williams (FLESH GORDON) leads a team of recently cut football players in this grindhouse flick. They kidnap a bus full of cheerleaders (from rival schools) with the help of the chaperone (Courtney Sands, another one of those actresses who disappeared after one film). Kristine DeBell (ALICE IN WONDERLAND) finds herself falling for Williams (the only one who isn't a psycho perv). This seems to be more like New World Pictures prison flicks than REVENGE OF THE CHEERLEADERS. The tone is uneven, going from silly to violent to silly again. With Marilyn "Cleopatra Schwartz" Joi, Ann Wharton, Lenka "Linda Chambers" Novak, Elizabeth Halsey (CINDERELLA), and Leon Isaac Kennedy as a DJ.

With a name like that, I expected a cheesy sex comedy or, perhaps, something akin to the Corman Nurse movies (sex with a little drama). I was not expecting something so sleazy I would feel like I needed a shower (not in a good way) afterwards. This felt as dirty and mean-spirited as an Italian movie, but with some tonally flat comedy shoe-horned in. The sex comedy I expected would have likely been forgettable fun. If it were the greasy Italian-feeling sleaze-fest that it becomes at times, it might have worked. The two together just don't work (sort of like the cop slapstick in Last House on the Left). Not recommended Actually fairly entertaining film.
A bunch of cheerleaders are kidnapped and held for ransom and what you'd expect from a late 70s to 80s era film happens. Nothing special, but still enjoyable to watch. A bus is carrying three different cheerleading squads to a competition when they are kidnapped by a group of terrorists. The women are held hostage and it doesn't take long for the sexuality to come out. THE GREAT AMERICAN GIRL ROBBERY, also known as CHEERLEADERS' WILD WEEKEND, isn't the greatest movie you're going to watch but it should have been. Yes, the film gets off to a great start as a couple sexy cheerleaders tease a redneck traveling behind the school bus. They show off some leg, show off some butt and eventually they show off some breasts to try and make the man wreck.
