[3] Plot [ edit] Fourteen-year-old Ulysses lives with his mother, Amara, and younger brother. Because his father has recently died, his mother's sister, the conservative Aunt Rose, agrees to help take care of Ulysses and his brother while their mother is at work. Ulysses is bullied at school by his classmates and threatened at home by Rose for his feminine characteristics. One night Ulysses ventures out into the city and meets a group of transgender and gay individuals, Ebony, Dijon, Raymond, and Heaven. Ebony invites Ulysses to Saturday Church, a program run at a church every Saturday to feed and provide shelter for LGBT youths. While there Ulysses develops an interest in voguing and buys a pair of high-heel shoes to practice in.

La película francesa juega a otra cosa, a mostrar "verdad" en la medida de lo posible y, en consecuencia, provocar que el espectador no se quede indiferente, sino que reflexione sobre lo que está viendo. ¿Y qué está viendo? Al margen de interpretaciones, a simple vista, la película nos introduce en un instituto de una zona conflictiva de París, más pobre y llena de inmigrantes, y nos muestra lo que ocurre durante un curso. Empezamos viendo a los profesores antes del primer día de clase, y terminamos (espero que no lo consideréis un spoiler) con la entrega de notas y el habitual partido entre ellos y los alumnos, todos en el patio, fuera de las aulas. Entre un momento y otro, una guerra que dura meses. Cada semana, cinco batallas diarias, de lunes a viernes, entre el profesorado y los alumnos. Lo hemos vivido todos, la relación no es fácil (siempre hay excepciones), y con el tiempo parece que se complica más, que los alumnos son más conflictivos y los profesores pasan cada vez más. Esto es todavía más complicado en el instituto de la película de Laurent Cantet, que nos presenta a unos profesores que conforme transcurre el curso van perdiendo ilusión, paciencia y confianza, incapaces de dar las clases tal como habían previsto a unos alumnos que no les tienen respeto y que no tienen ninguna intención por aprender.
