National Weather Service Products via WWV, WWVH HF Voice Discontinuation of NWS High Seas and Storm Warnings over NIST Time Frequency Broadcasts Effective January 31, 2019 The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), formerly the National Bureau of Standards, broadcasts a time and frequency service from stations WWV in Fort Collins, CO and WWVH in Kauai, Hawaii., commonly known to mariners as the "Time Tick", used as an aid in celestial navigation. Discrimination between the two stations may be accomplished as WWV uses a male announcer for announcement of time, while WWVH uses a female announcer. The audio portions of the WWV and WWVH broadcasts can also be heard by telephone. To hear these broadcasts, dial (303) 499-7111 for WWV (Colorado), and (808) 335-4363 for WWVH (Hawaii). Callers are disconnected after 2 minutes. These are not toll-free numbers; callers outside the local calling area are charged for the call at regular long-distance rates. The telephone service is very popular.

Double-clicking the desktop clock should lead to the options available. There are many commercial manufacturers who make clocks that receive time signals from NIST radio station WWVB. These are sometimes marketed as "atomic clocks", but we recommend that they be referred to as "radio-controlled clocks". The broadcast station is located near Ft. Collins, Colorado and it continuously broadcasts a time code on a carrier frequency of 60 kHz. These clocks and watches typically synchronize overnight and keep time between synchronizations using an internal quartz crystal oscillator. The WWVB broadcast covers most of the continental United States during the daytime hours, and the coverage area increases at night. For more information, see the section on NIST radio broadcasts. Some of the more common problems include incorrectly setting your local time zone on the clock, batteries that need to be replaced, and interference from other electrical devices such as refrigerators and computer monitors.

If you haven't already guessed it: yes, the mystery broadcast site I posted on Thursday was WWV/WWVB in Fort Collins, Colorado. Well done, responders! Specifically, the photo shows the southern antennas of WWV B as I departed the site on Thursday, August 28, 2014; for those of you who got that detail, extra credit–! I'd like to thank the staff at WWV/WWVB for allowing me to visit the site for the better part of the day. WWV is not officially open to tours, so this was a particular honor for me. And this was an especially fun pilgrimage, as WWV was most likely the first shortwave broadcast I ever heard: as I've previously noted, when I was a kid my father used to set his watch to WWV every Sunday morning. Now I've seen firsthand where that famous tock, tock (and accompanying characteristic tones) originate. When I return home from my extended travels, I'll sort through the photos I took at WWV and WWVB, and post them here on the SWLing Post. Meteorologists use the signals to track weather systems, utility companies rely on them to keep the electrical grid in sync, and medical institutions and broadcasters use them to keep their clocks accurate to within less than a second. Ham radio hobbyists use the stations to calibrate their equipment. One of them has started a petition to protect the stations from cuts, with support from an amateur radio advocacy group. The administration says newer GPS technology has rendered the two stations obsolete. But the station's fans say GPS signals don't penetrate through buildings the way the shortwave signals do — and that GPS gear is more expensive. They also worry that the cuts will lead to the elimination of a third station that keeps clocks in sync. WWVB is used to automatically synchronize millions of wall clocks and watches in schools, hospitals, and homes nationwide.
NIST radio station WWV broadcasts time and frequency information 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to millions of listeners worldwide. WWV is located near Fort Collins, Colorado, about 100 kilometers north of Denver. The broadcast information includes time announcements, standard time intervals, standard frequencies, UT1 time corrections, a BCD time code, and geophysical alerts. Broadcast Frequencies WWV operates in the high frequency (HF) portion of the radio spectrum. The station radiates 10 000 W on 5 MHz, 10 MHz, and 15 MHz; and 2500 W on 2. 5 MHz and 20 MHz. Each frequency is broadcast from a separate transmitter. Although each frequency carries the same information, multiple frequencies are used because the quality of HF reception depends on many factors such as location, time of year, time of day, the frequency being used, and atmospheric and ionospheric propagation conditions. The variety of frequencies makes it likely that at least one frequency will be usable at all times. Antennas The WWV antennas are half-wave vertical antennas that radiate omnidirectional patterns.
