Finger prints and DNA everywhere, but of course its a sign of the times. What makes it more disturbing is finding out that this was based on a actual serial killer. Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2020 Verified Purchase Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) is a disturbing horror gem, but the real events involving Henry Lee Lucas are much more unsettling. Although the movie is told and acted well, this version of Henry's life is G-rated in comparison with the sinister deeds he actually committed. However, it should be known that the MPAA slapped an X on this film after review, so director John McNaughton decided to leave the film unrated. Moreover, McNaughton said that his unrated, 82-minute version is basically a director's cut of the film since he declined to make edits to permit an R-rating. Dark Sky Film's (MPI Media Group) 20th Anniversary Special Edition of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer looks great on screen--it has an excellent vintage horror/grindhouse quality.

The opening few minutes will live in the memory forever with stark depictions of murder victims setting the tone for a thoroughly horrifying film. You really do feel as though you are being privy to real events rather than a simulation as is the intensity. The picture quality isn't great but that only adds to the character. I think only the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre film has had the same impact in this genre. Yeah I killed my Mama! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2019 Verified Purchase Came super fast, this has to be one of not even. The best serial killer movies of all time, Michael Rooker is fantastic and gives a faultless performance. As the notorious Henry Lee Lucas, a true classic. One for everyones collection.

The Blu Ray has a good amount of interesting extras also. Especially the Henry Lee Lucas mini documentary, the real life serial killer who this film was based off of. Pretty grim stuff. Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2017 Verified Purchase Holy moly for an older movie this is surprisingly good and disturbing. I had never even heard of it. I saw it listed as a top scary movie of all time on some You Tube video. This is one of those movies that was good but I don't know if I could watch it again. It was that disturbing and I love this genre of movie. I love watching FBI files, and the Discovery Investigative channel. I love psychological thrillers that really dig into the mind of how these people operate and why they do what they do. Michael Rooker is so amazingly great in this movie. I would have loved to see more on his childhood. If you like this type of movie I highly reccomend the new Netflix series Mindhunter. Of course with all the modern technology of forensics this guy would have been caught sooner.

2-Disc Special Edition "One of the 20 scariest movies of all-time! " - Entertainment Weekly Michael Rooker is unforgettable as Henry, a soft-spoken loner with a cool exterior masking an inner rage that boils at blast furnace intensity. When fellow ex-con Otis invites Henry to move into his Chicago apartment, he becomes a willing participant in Henry's senseless, random killing sprees. Meanwhile, Otis' unsuspecting sister, Becky (Tracy Arnold) is smitten with Henry, whose broken childhood mirrors her own. Masterfully directed by John McNaughton, HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER is a chilling character study of a mass murderer that continues to shock and disturb twenty years after its debut.

Top reviews from other countries 5. 0 out of 5 stars Killer Movie Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2017 Verified Purchase I bought this on the back of enjoying Michael Rooker's performance as Yondu in the "Guardians Of the Galaxy" movies, and I was not disappointed. The film is low budget and grainy, but the performance by Rooker and the direction is top-notch. I was afraid it was going to be overly gory, but apart from a few well-placed bloody bits, it's really more about the anticipation of what's going to happen and the knowing of what's happening in the shadows. Rooker strikes a perfect, uneasy balance of making the viewer almost like Henry sometimes, even though you know he's a cold hearted psychopath. It's a truly creepy performance, and is nailed throughout the film. This is truly one of the best films I've watched in ages, and I'm kicking myself for not discovering it earlier. If you enjoy watching stuff like "The Hitcher" or "Kalifornia, " reading books like "In Cold Blood, " or just want to watch a quality, intense dramatic thriller, this ticks any of those boxes.

1. 0 out of 5 stars Poor film Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 6, 2019 Verified Purchase I don't know why this film got so many positive reviews. I kept waiting for more to happen, for the plot to have some depth but it didn't get there for me. Maybe I've seen too many extreme horrors/psychological stuff for me to appreciate this. When it ended I thought, Is that IT? Disappointing because I was looking forward to this. 4. 0 out of 5 stars Be careful, you will remember it... Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 24, 2013 Verified Purchase This 1986 film deals with the very American subject, of the man-next-door serial killer. Henry is not raving mad, and holds down a regular job at times. He and his friend Otis like to go out for a few beers, pick up prostitutes or hitch-hikers, and kill them. Henry likes to consider his crimes, and to think through them, and in this manner, avoids detection. Otis becomes addicted to this life of murder, robbery, and rape; he eventually introduces his sister to his friend, and her and Henry become involved.

Additionally, the musical score is freakin bad-ass and ominous as hell, indeed sharpening and intensifying horrific images that cut into the cornea and make the eyeballs bleed and scream. And for a low-budget film, acting and cinematography are excellent--it certainly isn't apparent that this is low-budget cinema. Despite this movie not accounting for Lucas' hideous acts, it's understandable. For example, Lucas was a necrophile and pedophile, which probably wouldn't sit well with audiences, much less sell. However, Lucas' life is recounted in a 26-minute documentary titled "The Serial Killers: Henry Lee Lucas" included on disc 2 of the 20th Anniversary Edition. Also included are an entertaining, 53-minute documentary about the making of the movie and a feature-length commentary with McNaughton, which I haven't listened to yet. For fans of extreme horror, the 20th Anniversary Edition is worth adding to the collection. AND, I recently noticed MPI released a 30th Anniversary Edition of Blu-ray, which contains a few new bonus features.

Here's the plot: "Henry likes to kill people, in different ways each time. Henry shares an apartment with Otis. When Otis' sister comes to stay, we see both sides of Henry: "the guy next door" and the serial killer. " 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer' is currently available to rent, purchase, or stream via subscription on.
