Ironic, given that the book may be about the impossibility of understanding. Though you suspect the irony is lost on Steve. As might be the notion that lack of understanding is no bar to appreciation. The words 'insufferable inverse snob' come to mind. You suspect Steve may be either British, Irish, Australian or American, given the boorish anti-intellectualism that characterises the popular culture of those countries. Steve feels the prose is 'not easy to read' and is 'pretentious b***ocks'. Sigh. Wrong on both counts. The writing style is pared-down and simple, written in an almost-childish manner. It's the very opposite of pretentious. Pretentious writing is using big words when plain words would do; pretentious is dealing with experiences in a melodramatic manner. Handke does neither. However, he does deal with unconventional themes; and this may be what our 'no-nonsense' hero objects to. Perhaps, in Steve's world, reality is fixed. (And the sun perhaps revolves around the earth. )
