Le consorelle non sono certo religiose modello; chi spasima per Nazareno, il giovane uomo di fatica del convento, chi ha una condotta ambigua e morbosa, chi usa un linguaggio da caserma e fa scherzi di pessimo gusto, chi prova un piacere fisico a frustare a sangue le suore che hanno commesso qualche mancanza vera o presunta che sia. Suor Susanna è sempre più perseguitata dalle suore guidate da suor Teresa: invano don Morel, il giovane sacerdote che si è invaghito di lei, e suor Orsola che si dimostra vera amica, cercano di aiutarla. Alla fine suor Susanna è accusata di essere indemoniata ed arriva davanti al vescovo in un vero e proprio processo. Tutte le suore sono contro di lei, la superiora sta per morire e non può più fare niente per lei; suor Orsola è sola contro tutti; don Morel, per paura di compromettersi, non dice una parola per salvarla. Quindi Susanna vistasi accusata da ogni parte, disperata si getta a terra ed inizia a comportarsi veramente da indemoniata come ognuno ormai la crede.

Questo suscita la gelosia maligna di suor Teresa, vice madre superiora, ex favorita della superiora che si vede così messa da parte col rischio inoltre di perdere la sua supremazia nel convento.
