In S4E5, Local Ad, Michael says that Stanley will add an "urban vibe" to a commercial the company is making. Stanley replies, "I grew up in a small town. What about me seems urban to you? " This is rather interesting. As you're certainly aware, small towns in the US tend to host very few black residents, let alone any ethnic or racial minorities. Young Stanley might have been the only black kid in his classes; certainly one of less than ten at his school. In this rural environment, he would certainly have been met with a lot of ignorance and outright hostility ( especially in the 1960s). The other kids must have called him terrible names, asked inappropriate questions, and done other generally insensitive things. Eventually, Stanley figured out—whether on his own, or after an attempt to stand up for himself ended with him being beaten—that a hard exterior was the best way to go. Jerks love getting responses; all he had to do was not respond. He acted as though he didn't notice when people said slurs to him or shot him with spitballs.
