The movie advances with the grace and precision of a well-behaved novel. There is even a moment, perhaps, when we grow restless at the film's deliberate pace. But then, if we are sharp, we begin to realize that strange things are happening under our very noses. The draughtsman demands perfection. There must be no change, from day to day, in the view he paints. He aims for complete realism. But little changes do creep in. A window is left open. A ladder is found standing against a wall. There are things on the lawn that should not be on the lawn. The lady's daughter calls on the artist and suggests that a plot may be under way and that her father, the lord of the manor, may have been murdered. Furthermore, the artist may be about to be framed for the crime. As a payment for her friendship, the daughter demands the same payment in "intimate hospitality" as her mother. Now the artist is not only draughtsman but lover to mother and daughter and the possible object of a plot to frame him with murder.

It's a none-too-solemn, enigmatic tale of murder set in a great English country house in 1694, when morals among the newly rich were as loose as absolutely possible and manners were mad mannerisms of dress, speech and behavior. Peter Greenaway creates an extraordinarily detailed picture of a historical period, not as it was, but as it is imagined by a somewhat surreal artist today. He's also a wizard with a budget. Working with some $500, 000 provided by the British Film Institute in association with Channel Four Television, he has made an astonishingly elegant film, and one that is as mindbendingly rich to listen to as to see. To the film's collection of schemers, dupes and delighted voyeurs, words are weapons and the complete sentences - in which the characters always speak - are battle plans. The screenplay is as dense with bossy epigrams as the magnificent English landscape is lush with foliage of every conceivable shade of green. The draughtsman of the title is a certain Mr. Neville (Anthony Higgins), an ambitious, handsome young man who makes his living by traveling from one country house to the next, executing bloodless drawings of the property in return for modest fees and the hospitality of the house.

The Draughtsman's Contract arrives on DVD with a sizeable reputation. This is, after all, the film which launched the international careers of both director Peter Greenaway and composer Michael Nyman; was one of the first features to receive finance from Channel Four; and also reinvigorated in audiences an interest for the period drama, albeit ones which moved beyond the merely pictorial. Yet for all this, it is the origins of The Draughtsman's Contract, rather than its effects, which prove more interesting. Having produced a number of documentary-influenced works for the BFI, Greenaway was prompted by the then Head of Production Peter Sainsbury to undertake what is perhaps the ultimate experiment for the experimental filmmaker, namely to partake in the devices of the mainstream. This meant, in response to Greenaway's work at the time, to adopt something of a true narrative drive or, to put it simply, a story. And it's an undertaking which prompts a question or two. Should The Draughtsman's Contract therefore be viewed, and judged, merely on narrative terms?

What we have here is a tantalizing puzzle, wrapped in eroticism and presented with the utmost elegance. I have never seen a film quite like it. "The Draughtsman's Contract" seems to be telling us a very simple story in a very straightforward way, but after it's over you may need hours of discussion with your friends before you can be sure (if even then) exactly what happened. The film takes place in 1694, in the English countryside. A rich lady ( Janet Suzman) hires an itinerant artist to make 12 detailed drawings of her house. The artist ( Anthony Higgins) strikes a hard bargain. In addition to his modest payment, he demands "the unrestricted freedom of her most intimate hospitality. " Since the gentleman of the house is away on business, the lady agrees, and thus begins a pleasant regime divided between the easel and the boudoir. All of this is told in the most precise way. All of the characters speak in complete, elegant, literary sentences. All of the camera strategies are formal and mannered.

Peter Greenaway Peter Greenaway embarked on his career as a filmmaker in 1966 at age 24. After graduating from Walthamstow College of Art, he began a long period of employment as a film director and editor at the Central Office of Information, a UK government department responsible for making public information films. Both of these institutions have heavily marked his film work, bringing together a strong visual sense as befits a painter, and an obsessive exploration of the absurdity of bureaucracies and the possibilities or otherwise of the documentary form. These two elements can be seen throughout his early short films. Throughout his career, as well as making films, Greenaway has remained active as a fine artist, exhibiting paintings at Lord's Gallery in 1964; illustrating three books in 1970 ( The Alphabetical Gang Lion; Gang Lion and the Visual Flush and Tulse Luper and the Centre Walk); producing the Water Papers (a set of fifty drawings) in 1974 (exhibited at Arts 38 and Curwen Gallery in 1976) and the paintings and drawings involved in A Walk Through H (1978) and The Draughtsman's Contract in 1982.

There is more. There is a lot more, all allowed to unfold at the same deliberate pace. There is a mysterious statue in the garden. An eavesdropper. Misbehaved sheep. The raw materials of this story could have been fashioned into a bawdy romp like " Tom Jones. " But the director, Peter Greenaway, has made a canny choice. Instead of showing us everything, and explaining everything, he gives us the clues and allows us to draw our own conclusions. His movie is like a crossword puzzle for the senses.
